The Message Behind the Makeup; Lipstick Sales To Support AIDS Education

April 2004 (Newstream) --

ANCHOR LEAD: We all know how important AIDS education is in the prevention of the spread of this terrible disease. Now a well known cosmetic company is using makeup as a way to increase AIDS awareness. Roberta Facinelli has more. (:60)

SCRIPT: Lifestyles, I'm Roberta Facinelli. The statistics are alarming. More than half of all the new HIV and AIDS infections in the U.S. are in young adults under the age of 25! And research shows that 1 in 3 Americans living with HIV/AIDS don't know they have it. It's clear that education is key in preventing new infections. Singer Christina Aguilera has joined forces with a popular cosmetics company, MAC, to help to spread the message.

CUT: (Aguilera) This whole topic of AIDS is something that can be taken very lightly, especially with the younger generation. They think it can't happen to them, or only happens to a certain stereotype. It's affecting everyone's lives.

SCRIPT: MAC cosmetics is donating 100 percent from the sale of Viva Glam V Lipstick, to help the men, women and children who are affected by HIV and AIDS. The purchase of one Viva Glam lipstick, which is available wherever MAC Cosmetics are sold, could cover a weeks worth of food for a family affected by AIDS, or 5 days of housing costs for patients, or 280 condoms. Also featured in the campaign are Boy George, Missy Elliot, Chloe Sevigny and Linda Evangelista. I'm Roberta Facinelli.
